Damaging pulsation and vibration generated by reciprocating compressors can be significantly reduced by fitting correctly designed pulsation dampeners. The multiple chambers introduce repeated expansions and contractions in the flow path which reflect the pressure waves back towards the source. The tubes are arranged as to introduce a phase difference between their respective flow streams such that when the streams recombine a substantial canceling of the pressure pulsations occur.
This arrangement has found that pressure pulsations in gas lines may be reduced to less than 10% of the input pulsation and the residual pulsations reduced to less than 1% of the line pressure involved. Although these devices are generally tuned to a specific frequency, the attenuation performance has a flat characteristic from 75% to 400% of the design frequency which gives a useful working range of attenuation when attempting to dampen those frequencies which tend to excite vibration of pipelines and their attachments. The unit is fabricated with reinforcement at nozzle junctions and internal bulkheads so that it will withstand direct exposure to the undampened pulsations, although this reinforcement is not usually required by the pressure vessel design and construction codes. Flo-Dyne offer a full design and manufacturing service which is backed by over 30 years of experience in the noise and pulsation control field.
